Today, I am so excited to be sharing my first gift guide of the season and will be sharing  a bunch more over the next few weeks to hopefully help you check all the boxes on your shopping list. Fall Essentials: Shirts & Sweaters

Today I am sharing the 8 shirts that every closet needs this season. I wanted to focus on the types of clothing I like to layer; button-ups, sweaters, and cardigans, as well as a variety of textures and prints that can be mixed and matched with each other.

1.) Chambray Shirt. This one's pretty much a no brainer, but an essential nonetheless. It can be worn under cardigans and sweaters or open over a graphic or embellished tee. Throw it on over your favorite summer dress and tie at the waist to transition you warm weather favorites into the fall.

2.) Leopard Print Sweater. My love of leopard print meets a new point of obsession with this leopard cardigan from Target. It's perfect for layering over a chambray shirt, plaid shirt, or turtleneck. Since leopard has been declared a neutral, the possibilities are nearly endless!

3.) Graphic or Embellished T-shirt. My pick for this season is this gorgeous gold block/stripe tee, which will transition through the holidays nicely as well. It's perfect for wearing under an open-front cardigan or jazzing up a blazer.

4.) Fair Isle Sweater. I love a good fair isle print, I mean, seriously, who doesn't? But this little sweater in particular has stolen my heart. Whether on its own, or over the chambray, a plaid shirt, or a turtleneck, this black and white sweater would be wonderful!

5.) Turtleneck. They aren't just for your granny or the 90's anymore. This updated striped turtleneck is so soft and cozy, you'll want to live in it til spring! It's been an instant favorite in my closet, perfect with a cardigan, vest, or button-up.

6.) Plaid Shirt. I "need" another plaid shirt like I need a hole in the head, but how can I resist this vibrant red buffalo check? It's the perfect transition piece from day to night! Dress it up with pearls, your leopard cardi, and a black pencil skirt for work, then swap the cardi for a cargo vest, and the skirt for leggings and boots to hit the local bar for happy hour.

7.) Aztec/Tribal Print Sweater. I bought my printed open front cardigan near the end of summer in preparation of the impending cooler temps and it may just be my favorite piece this fall. Since most of these types of sweaters are oversized, they are perfect to throw on over just about any solid shirt, embellished tee, or even a button-up - I thinking of you, chambray shirt.

8.) Burgundy Everything. You may remember it from last year's "oxblood" color trend and this year its back - pretty much a continuation of the same thing, but with a new name. These deep reds and berries have stolen my heart and taken over my closet. Make sure to snatch up a piece or two in this rich hue.

Friday Favorites: Winter Essentials

It's double the fun on FSF today, two posts in one day! The world MUST be ending, right? Nope, probably not, I am just finally posting a bunch of things that have been in the works so I hope you enjoy!

A few months back I rounded up some of my seasonal favorites and did a post on all the things I couldn't live without last fall. Well, now that the polar vortex part dos is assuring us that winter is sticking around for awhile, I decided I might as well compile the products and pieces I am currently loving, and couldn't survive the season without. 

Essie Polish: No other time of the year says "sparkle" to me like winter. With the glistening snow and twinkle of the holidays, I can't help but want a little extra glitz for my tips. This winter I have been reaching for gold and silver metallics, with topcoats of glitter polish. No one does luxe like Essie, and this winter is no exception. Two of my favorite polishes right now are "Good as Gold" and their Luxeffects "Sparkle on Top." Both are perfect alone and even better together!

Fur Lined Suede Moccasins: Winter is pretty much the only time of year I don't wander my apartment barefoot. There is just something about being barefoot that is comfortable and liberating to me. I generally dislike slippers and even to a certain extent socks. However, I have hard wood floors in my apartment and even without the polar vortex, find them to be a little too cold during winter to walk around without a barrier between them and my skin. Enter moccasins: the perfect house shoe. I have a pair lined with fur and an unlined suede pair, they work with or without socks and don't slip off like traditional slippers. Which drives me nuts. I wear them all the time when just hanging out in my apartment.

Candy Cane Chapstick: Hello new favorite thing. I am obsessed with lip balm, my lips always seem to be dry and cracked, dry lips are my biggest pet peeve, I hate having them or even seeing them on other people. Gah! Nightmares! Anyways, I love that Chapstick released this slightly tingly, peppermint-y flavor for the holidays. Not only did I stock-up to last the rest of winter, but I gave them to everyone for Christmas to spread their awesomeness with others. =)

Winter Candy Apple Gel & Body Cream: So...this is actually a sad one for me. For years this has been my go-to scent for winter. Every year for like the past 5 years someone in my family knows that I love it, need it, have to have it, and buys it for me for my birthday or Christmas. This year, no such luck...and with the hustle and bustle of the season, I completely forgot to pick it up for myself. So, I missed out. BBW ran out in the local stores quickly and then the body cream sold out online too. Infinite sad face. So, I am currently rationing the last of my supply from last year and am about to run out, eek! Anyways, its a must have. Find it while you can! 

Plaid Peacoat: Living in a cold state where winter seems to last the better part of the year, I have always liked to have a variety of coats to choose from for when I leave the confines of my warm apartment. I think that outerwear is just as much a statement about your style and taste preferences as your normal clothes are. This probably explains why I love me a plaid winter coat (or 5). My philosophy is that if you like your coat(s) you will be more inclined to want to leave your apartment and not just hibernate all winter. To me, coats in unexpected prints, colors, shapes, and details are fabulous. I don't want to wear a boring black coat for 6 months out of the year (if you do, that's a-okay too), its just my personal preference. However, good outerwear, the type that actually keeps your warm and is cut to fit all your bulky layers without making you look like the kid from A Christmas Story, are not typically cheap. This is why I stalk sales and look for middle of the road priced pieces, knowing I won't wear the same coat every day, but that I want to be warm and comfortable too. I think that this peacoat by Old Navy is perfection. I love the red and navy pattern, the cute play on a peter pan collar (which is removeable), and the contrast between textures of the smooth wool and the sherpa collar. Just darling! I definitely snatched this up in December and have had it in rotation with my two other plaid dress coats this winter. At 50% off, there is not time like the present to add this piece to your closet too!

Cream Bow Gloves: This goes along with the coat philosophy: have lots of cute options and putting on your winter duds will seem like planning another outfit (yay!) versus transforming into the Michelin man to leave the house (boo!). I always destroy my gloves, I wear them to death which is why having a lot helps. when one unravels or gets lost, I have back-ups ready and my tiny fingers are never left to become popsicles. I particularly love the gloves with the mitten flap because I fine them the most practical for my everyday life. These cream ones match the sherpa in the coat above AND have sparkly bows, what more could you want? 

Tassel Necklace: I wear mine practically everyday. It is seriously the greatest piece ever; goes with basically every neckline, every color, pattern, cut, layer under a scarf, in a neck stack, etc. Seriously, the styling possibilities are endless. I got mine (featured in excess on instagram) from Mint Sugar Boutique, but there are so many options, like the one pictured from Bauble Bar which comes in a variety of colors/metals. You won't regret adding one to your collection. 

Alice & Olivia for Starbucks Travel Mug: Just look at it; adorable, ridiculous, fun. It's a mug wearing a tutu. Enough said.

Cable Knit Sweater: Fact: you cannot survive the polar vortex or any of its siblings without a healthy supply of sweaters to slip into and cozy up in. This happens to be my personal favorite, I love the color, the cable knit pattern and the material. Since I am allergic to wool, I especially love that this is wool-free, yet it is still super warm. It comes in a variety of colors and can be worn over a button-up, under a vest, or on its own with a scarf or jewelry. Definitely a winter staple. 

Candy Cane Lane Tea: It's simply delicious, the perfect hint of candy cane. Buy it, make it, become addicted.  

Fresh Picked Hard Working Hand Cream: I work in an office and handle a ton of paper. I live in a state that salts its paved surfaces in the winter. I exist in a world bent on sucking moisture from me. =( Hand cream is pretty much essential to not having my skin splitting open and bleeding everywhere. As a sensitive skinned and mentally unstable crazy person, I am incredibly picky about cream and lotion texture/consistency. Think of me as the Goldie Locks of lotions. This product line from BBW is a life safer, as its "just right." Not greasy or oily, light fragrance, coats but doesn't make your hands feel slick. I use it like 5 times a day and am still on my first tube, which I bought in the fall = extra happy camper.

Faux Fur Throw Blanket: I'm unashamedly an old lady trapped in a nearly 30 year old body. I am cold all.the.time. It's not even funny; shivering is like a natural state for my body. I wear sweaters in the summer, so you can image that amount of clothing I need to wear in the winter. So, when I went out in search of yet another throw blanket for my apartment and stumbled about this jem I was elated. This faux fur blanket is the best thing ever. Its like being hugged by a million polar bears. I am almost never without it at home (where no matter what the thermostat says, it always feels 10 degrees colder). It you are a cold blooded person like myself, which I am declaring a thing, you need this blanket, check your local Target stat people!

Knee High Socks: Obviously. I don't wear boots without these. You can wear them over leggings, tights, and jeans (or under depending on the cut). I am digging cute details, like the bows on this pair, but patterns, a variety of colors, and varying heights are all worth experimenting with. 

Plaid Snow Boots: as much as I would love and could totally justify investing in a good pair of snow boots, like Sorels, I cannot afford them at this time. BUT Target has some amazing options that are much more pleasing to my bank account. From their selection of casual boots, dress boots, ankles boots, rain boots, and snow boots, Target is definitely stepping up their game to offer designer inspired options at a lower price. I have the particular pair pictured and these boots are cute, warm, cozy, and with a rubber sole, are holding up well to Detroit's icy, snowy, freezing winter. I picked them up right after Christmas for 40% off, which made them a total steal!

Merry Cookie Candle: Every season has a blend of scents in my apartment because I am pretty much obsessed with candles, so one is never enough! For fall its pumpkin, spice, and apple inspired scents, for winter its vanilla, sugar cookies, and caramel. BBW has such yummy candle fragrances and they easily fill the air with a delightful aroma after a short time of burning. I am definitely a fan! I have also been known to pick up the jar candles from Michael's (the craft store) which have great scents at an unbeatable price (find them on sale for 2 for $8!). My only complaint is that they don't burn down as clean as the BBW ones or as soy candles. What are you favorite scents?

Holiday Gift Guides - The Guy's Edition

Happy happy Monday (night) loves! It never fails that there are just too many things to do, and so little time to do them in! I really wanted to get this up last week, but life had other plans (we plan and God laughs, right?). Though, I'm sure you were all rushing to prepare for Turkey Day and the madness that was Black Friday, so hopefully you can relate and forgive me, pretty please; I am posting now, after all =) I shall try really hard to post again with a Thanksgiving day recap later this week (fingers crossed)! But, until then, I would like to share with you some items that I have been perusing for the men on my shopping list, in case you need a little inspiration! Confession time: I hate, loathe, dislike, etc. the word 'man'...and its plural 'men.' Its so weird and formal and gross to me (hello new bucket of issues to discuss with my non-existent therapist). I much prefer the word 'guys' to 'men' so that is what I shall try to stick to going forward. Now, there are significantly fewer gift guides for the guys than for the girls, since, in my experience and opinion, guys are much easier to shop for. Get them the newest electronic toy, latest movie release, new socks to replace the ones lost to the monster living in the dryer, and they are happy as a clam. Sweet and simple right? Throwin' Elbows + Zara Scarf Winner

Happy Friday lovelies!! TGIF, indeed. This is one week I am glad is over. As the semester begins its rapid descent to completion, my stress levels increase exponentially. It just seems like there are fewer and fewer hours in a day, which is just compacted by daylight savings. Now don't get me wrong, I cherished my extra hour of sleep last weekend, but to be frank, having it be pitch black before 6 o'clock sucks. Having fewer hours of daylight makes my brain go into overdrive freak-out mode as it believes there are in fact less hours to do things too. Weird how much we associate time with light, or maybe its just me... Is anyone else suffering major panic attacks over not having enough time, and thinking its like 10 pm when its 6 pm? Such an anti-fun mind boggle. Crossing my fingers to adjust soon...gah!

Anyways, my time comprehension issues aside, this week has been biting at frosty temperatures which in turn has caused me to basically live in my warmest and coziest sweaters, cardigans, and knits. I have been getting a lot of inquires on my instagram outfit posts about where I have purchased several of the knits I wore this week. Unfortunately, almost everything my incredibly stylish followers inquire about is old news. I hang on to sweaters for ages and many of these are more than a year or two old. So, after I posted one of my favorite pieces this morning and received so much love over the cardigan featured, a piece that again, is several years old, I was inspired. One of my favorite details for fall and winter is elbow patches. I am sure you all love them too, how could you not? ;-) It's such a classic detail, whether its mimicking classic tweed blazer patches I think of a professor wearing while smoking a pipe, pursuing his library, or the soft cardigan patches, adorned by the dad as he plays in the fallen autumn leaves with his kids, this trend is full of styling opportunities from generations of its male counterparts. Since elbow patches are a menswear inspired detail, I'm always compelled to reminisce about my grandfathers, and even my father, when I see them. The nostalgic aspect of the patches is just something I cannot escape. There is just something about elbow patches on sweaters and cardigans that make me feel like I am being wrapped up in their love and protective arms when I wear them, especially in this cardigan, with its muted, masculine tones.

All of my imaginative and emotional impositions on this detail aside (and now that you know how tangent driven my brain is), I also just love the unexpected pop of color and the fun new ways elbow patches are being done today to make a masculine detail a tad more feminine, like the sequined patches on the Old Navy cardi, or the heart shaped patches on the ASOS sweater. Another popular update to this classic style for this season includes leather patches (leather is everywhere right now!). There is also a transition to fastening them on pull-over sweaters in addition to the traditional pieces like cardigans and blazers. Any way you slice it, elbow patches are a must this season! I must admit that number 8 is by far my favorite. I love the color blocking (the cobalt is fabulous next to the grey) and the chunkiness of the knit, plus is a cardigan! Hello, lover! And, although I am a little cautious about all the leather popping up this season, these leather elbow patches are a phenomenal final touch on it. It's most definitely going on my lust list!

Wednesday Wants & Wishes: Color Crush on Bordeaux

Happy Hump Day! Today I am swooning over just about everything and anything in the shade of bordeaux. Call it burgundy, wine, brick, oxblood, etc. I don't really care, all I know is that I am currently smitten over this deep shade of red. For the past few years I have been a fan of red lips, the bold, brighter, saturated, stop sign red. I wear it year round whenever I needed a lipstick rather than my typical (daily) lip gloss. This fall however, I have started collecting lip shades in a plethora of red shades, reddish purples, dark scarlets, even venturing into the rosy-taupe spectrum. During my wanderings into new lipstick territories, I tripped and fell hard for creamy, rich shades of bordeaux (seen here). From lips to finger tips, I cannot get enough of the color, so much so that I have been seriously stalking some clothing items to bring the color out of its current role as a supporting actress, to a leading lady in my outfits. Here are a few of the things that are just itching to find a new home in my closet!

I am always on the look out for cozy sweaters as winter approaches and both of these sweaters would fit perfectly into my wardrobe. With the holidays approaching, adding subtle pops of this color to your outfits is a perfect way to introduce it to your wardrobe, ie through dark lips and nails, or in your accessories, like with the scarf, bag (love the color block one and the other is a perfect look for less of the RM Mini MAC), and jewelry (statement earrings and necklaces in this color right now are out of control gorgeous). Its a bold color, so it you are not comfortable donning these cute coated skinnies or this adorable dress (perfect with black tights and booties now, and gold bows and glitter pumps for the holidays), accessories is an easy and affordable way to ease into the color. What ever you choose to do, I hope you find the perfect piece in this gorgeous color for fall and the holiday season!

In(sta)vested

So in yesterday's post I wrote about my favorite things and I realized I haven't posted any outfit pictures featuring my beloved herringbone vest, which is seriously crazy because I wear it ALL.THE.TIME. Today is the day I correct this grave travesty! For today's post, I wanted to do a quick compilation of photos from my iPhone and instagram showing how I have style this amazing piece so far and tomorrow I will have a full outfit post featuring the vest.

As you can probably tell from these photos, I am a huge fan of layering and mixing patterns, which is why this vest is so perfect for my personal style! You can also see that I definitely re-wear my clothing and accessories, I just can't afford to buy new outfits every week, so I try to be creative and resourceful with what I have and the selective new pieces I add. Getting the most out of my wardrobe is important to me and I hope I have inspired you to combine some pieces you may have otherwise thought not to. Cool Weather Cozy

This past week I have been out of commission with a nasty cold. I know what you are thinking: eew, gross, stay away from me! How do I know this? Because that was my reaction to my boyfriend when he got sick last weekend. But he did not as we had homework, and consequently I became sick. Yay. This combined with rain, dropping temps, and the return of my Saturday class has left me a little brain dead and exhausted. Think, zombie...a really attractive zombie princess to be exact...ok fine...at least the zombie princess part =)

Therefore, I don't have an outfit post for you today. BUT during the landslide of fun I experienced this past week and weekend, I finally got into the blanket mode of fall. You know, when you come home, change into non-work clothes, put you hair in a messy bun, and roll up into a blanket burrito? No? Well, you should, 'cuz its awesome. Anyways, I am personally, officially, in that mode. Along with curling up in a blanket immediately upon returning to my apartment for the night, I am also starting to pull out my cozy clothes, knits, thick socks, fleece collection, warm fuzzy scarves, etc.. And before you judge that it's only October and I am basically prepping to stay warm through a snowpocalypse, I will have you know that its dropping into the deadly 30's here in the mitten already. Le angry sigh. I dislike winter with as much passion as I love fall. But that is a rant discussion for another day ;-)

So, in my cozy, wanting to live an a blanket fort, drinking hot cocoa like its going out of style, bundling up like I'm in A Christmas Story state, I have been stalking cold weather accessories and layering pieces like a mad woman. I have to admit that I want to buy just about everything I see on Old Navy's site lately...but I won't, I promise. However, I cannot oversell how amazing their pieces for winter are. So amazing in fact, that this girl, who loathes winter more than men hate shoe shopping with their girlfriends, is actually not dreading it's impending doom quite as much (don't worry, I'm still no snow bunny). I have chosen some of my favorite cozy pieces to share with you all today. While its a little early (fingers crossed Mother Nature agrees) to pull out a parka or pea coat, these items could easily be added to fall outfits now and transition slowly (hear that Mother Nature? slowly) into winter.

Old Navy Cash

I don't know about you, but Old Navy has been stealing my heart, and subsequently my cash, season after season. I went a little crazy a few weekends ago when they had their $15 off every $50 you spend promotion, and picked up quite a few goodies. However, my store had not received much of their fall inventory, cue critter sweaters, military jackets, suede flats, and jeweled crew sweaters. Having seen these items online, I was crushed that I could not get the instant gratification of picking them up during the sale. Just as I was about to have a (tiny, I swear) pity party over this grave injustice minor hiccup, I received Old Navy cash for my purchases during this sale and just like that my faith in Old Navy was restored!

So over the weekend, I created a list of things I "need" to complete my fall wardrobe, and have assembled the following list of items I plan to pick up this weekend when my Old Navy cash goes live. Many items can be layered with other pre-fall purchases I have made, some are trends I am excited to try, and others replace items I have loved, sadly, to death. Keep in mind that I have (4) $20 off $50 cash coupons, a $50 giftcard, and $20 in rewards, that I will be using to minimize the pinch on my wallet.
